Pharmacy students from the Faculty of Medicine and Medicine, State Islamic University of Malang (UIN Malang) have once again achieved a proud achievement on the international stage. This achievement came from the Naraya Team, consisting of five Pharmacy Study Program students from the 2021 class, supervised by Mayu Rahmayanti, S.Farm., M.Sc. The students are M. Alauddin, Rosa Rahmayanti, Qoriah Nur, Oashiva Hyngwie, and M. Faisal. Through a scientific paper entitled "Utilization of Local Durian Peel Waste (Durio zibethinus Murr.) in Ngantang Region, Malang Regency as a Candidate for Anti-Acne Phytopharmacy Products: Peel-Off Acne Spot Gel Prototype Development), Naraya Team successfully achieved Gold Medal category Environmental Science in the IICYMS 2023 scientific paper competition.

Documentation of Naraya Team's Achievements

The International Invention Competition for Young Moslem Scientists (IICYMS) is a scientific paper competition run by the Indonesian Young Scientists Association. It attracted 184 teams, ranging in educational level from elementary school to university, from both Indonesia and abroad.

In an interview with the PRESS TEAM on Wednesday (June 28, 2023), Rafi, the team representative, revealed that durian peel waste, the primary focus, is a significant commodity in Malang Regency, particularly in Ngantang District, and is prone to environmental pollution. Durian peels are considered useless waste by the community, often leading to accumulation. This accumulation is not only harmful to the environment but can also disrupt the comfort of local residents.

Through flavonoid and tannin testing conducted by the Naraya Team, the results showed that durian skin contains flavonoids and tannins, which are effective in treating acne. Other research has also shown that durian skin has antibacterial properties against Propionibacterium acnes, acne-causing bacteria. Therefore, they used durian peel as the active ingredient in a peel-off acne spot gel called "ACDIOS.".

In working on their scientific paper, the Naraya Team encountered several challenges, particularly in managing their time. The lengthy process of creating ACDIOS and compiling the scientific paper was carried out amidst a busy class schedule. However, with good time management and teamwork, the Naraya Team was able to successfully complete their scientific paper and successfully obtain a Ph.D. Gold Medal.

“"The process of creating ACDIOS was quite challenging for us. It was quite a long process, starting from sourcing raw materials, making durian peel extract, preformulation, and formulation. Furthermore, we compiled our KTI in two languages, Indonesian and English, to make it easier for us to understand each section of our KTI. Our KTI will eventually have to be presented in English," Rafi explained.

The Naraya team advised all UIN Malang FKIK students, "Don't hesitate and develop your potential, both academic and non-academic. Always be brave enough to start new things and make the most of every opportunity."“
