On Sunday (November 20, 2022), the Student Senate (SEMA) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UIN Malang, presented an Advocacy School for the Intra-Campus Student Organization (OMIK) FKIK administrators. As the highest student legislative body within the faculty, SEMA FKIK provides a forum for OMIK administrators to understand advocacy on campus. The Advocacy School activity carried the theme "Building Critical Thinking in Students in the Era of Disruption Through Advocacy." This was motivated by the role of students as agent of change Advocacy skills are essential. Advocacy itself is a careful, planned, and organized way to advocate for or encourage change. The goal of advocacy is to bring about policy change so that the wider community can benefit.
This activity took place at the Ibnu Thufail Building, FKIK UIN Malang, and was attended directly by the Deputy Dean III for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Alvi Milliana, M.Biomed. On that occasion, Dr. Alvi said that advocacy is expected not only to be seen from a narrow perspective, but can be seen from a broad perspective as is also actively socialized by health professional organizations in Indonesia. On the same occasion, Hidayatullah as the chairman of SEMA FKIK said that the role of SEMA is not only as a forum to accommodate aspirations, but can also be a liaison between students and leaders such as the dean through conveying aspirations with advocacy methods.
The advocacy school, conducted by SEMA FKIK, featured three speakers on three related topics. The first session, "Introduction to Advocacy," was delivered by Mambaul Hikam, SH. He explained the definition, goals, objectives, process, and implementation of advocacy. With a background in legal consulting, Mambaul Hikam was adept at providing a concrete overview of advocacy as it exists around us.
The second speaker, Kitmanul Arori, Chair of the 2017/2018 FKIK Student Executive Board (SEMA), discussed campus anthropology. He also touched on the typology of existing campus systems, allowing participants to understand the characteristics and various roles of students, which will undoubtedly impact change, both now and in the future.
The third presentation was delivered by Ubaidillah Nugroho. He chose the theme "Communication in Negotiation." This theme was chosen due to the importance of good communication for successful negotiations in any advocacy process. This material covered the definition, characteristics, principles, obstacles, steps, and tips and tricks of negotiation.
After the three materials were presented, participants were divided into several small groups to then carry out a session. focus discussion group (FGD) by discussing several predetermined issues. Each group was then asked to analyze the issue, and the results were presented in the form of input points from the advocacy school participants to the faculty, which would then be submitted to the Dean's Office as a follow-up to the advocacy school held by SEMA FKIK UIN Malang.
