In its second year of establishment, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang has conducted Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for its students several times, in the implementation of the Final Semester Examination (UAS) for the 2017-2018 academic year, precisely on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15, 2018, the Medical Education Study Program conducted an OSCE exam for second and fourth semester students which was attended by 98 students. The OSCE exam is one of the examination methods in the medical faculty with the aim of testing the skills of medical education students in addition to the CBT exam which is carried out to test student knowledge.
The OSCE exam, conducted at Campus 3 of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, is a method for objectively and structuredly assessing clinical competency through a series of stations within a specific timeframe. It is objective because all students are tested with the same exam. It is structured because specific clinical skills are tested using a specific assessment sheet. During the OSCE exam at the PSPD UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, participants must complete eight to nine stations, each with a variety of clinical problems.
During the exam, participants move through several sequential stations. At each station, there is a task or problem to be performed/demonstrated, or a question to be answered. Participants will be observed by the examiner.
The examiner's assessment is based on a comprehensive decision across various competency components. Each station has specific test material. All participants are tested on the same clinical material. Time for each station is limited.
Despite being extremely tiring and draining on both physical and mental effort, the students taking the OSCE exam appeared to be taking it seriously, as their future as future doctors will largely depend on their clinical skills and knowledge. (SH)
