Bali, January 14, 2025. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) UIN Malang has participated in a workshop entitled "“Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Medicine”" which was held on January 13-14, 2025, took place in Bali. This activity is the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology KEMENDIKBUDRISTEK with several international universities, namely the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center located at the University in Diversity Campus Bali. With the main speaker being Professor Willem Owehand, Emeritus Professor of Experimental Hematology, Director of Research Honorary Consultant in Hematology at Cambridge University Hospitals, University College London Hospitals and NHS Blood and Transplant.

The event was attended by 15 participants from various institutions such as the University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Padjajaran University (UNPAD), Ciputra University, and others, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Health. FKIK UIN Malang was represented by Dr. dr. Ermin Rachmawati, M.Biomed and Dr. Alvi Milliana, M.Biomed.

According to Dr. Ermin from the Faculty of Medicine and Medicine, UIN Malang, the workshop discussed the position and considerations of AI in medicine, as well as how medical professionals need to approach this technological development wisely. "AI in medicine is like a double-edged sword. It's very helpful in accelerating the resolution of health problems, but it should still be used as a consideration, not the primary decision-making tool," he said.

One of the keynote speakers, Prof. Willem from the University of Cambridge, presented material related to the application of AI in biomolecular and genomic testing. Prof. Willem, recognized as one of the world's leading experts in medicine, also outlined the University of Cambridge's contributions to scientific advancement, including innovations in DNA sequencing. "Their research has significantly influenced current medical practice, from the discovery of DNA structure to the development of sequencing methods that now allow DNA identification in just days.",” explained Dr. Ermin. According to Dr. Ermin, this workshop provided important lessons for FKIK UIN Malang. "We learned how discipline, passion, and collaboration are the keys to their success. From this, we also understand that research is a source of knowledge that must be continuously developed," he added. The follow-up to this forum is planned to be held in October 2025. This activity is expected to produce research projects based on artificial intelligence (AI) and biomolecular that can have a significant impact in addressing various health problems in Indonesia. This workshop is proof that FKIK UIN Malang continues to strive to expand its international network and increase its contribution to the global medical world.

In an interview with Dr. Alvi, he explained that the two-day Collaboration Seminar successfully provided new knowledge, valuable experiences, and beneficial relationships for the participants. The material presented was relevant and in-depth, supported by the presence of participants from various backgrounds, which enabled the creation of productive interactions. According to Dr. Alvi, the speakers in this seminar demonstrated extraordinary mastery of knowledge by delivering material broadly and in depth based on their proven experience and expertise. For two days, the activity took place full-time with high discipline, ensuring that each session ran according to schedule with maximum effectiveness.

Furthermore, Dr. Alvi revealed that this activity was followed by a program Tutor Training involving lecturers. This program aims to disseminate the knowledge gained during the seminar and provide broader benefits to the academic community. Furthermore, the seminar opens up promising research collaboration opportunities, including a collaboration with Prof. Willem of Cambridge University. Prof. Willem's expertise and reputation are considered to offer significant potential for the development of high-quality research in the future.
