Moving Forward, the Medical Study Program Holds Offline OSCE Exams Again

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only had a direct impact on public health in Indonesia but also indirectly on all aspects of life, including education. Achieving certain competency standards requires a holistic understanding that encompasses not only cognitive aspects but also psychomotor and affective aspects. During the pandemic, learning related to cognitive aspects can be addressed through online learning systems, but it becomes less effective when applied to psychomotor and affective aspects. Therefore, at the end of the even semester of the 2020/2021 academic year, from May to June 2021, the Medical Education Study Program (PSPD), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, will again hold the National Examination. Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE) offline.

The series of OSCE exams for the PSPD FKIK UIN Malang this semester will take place for 4 weeks starting from Monday (05/24/2021). The exam participants are PSPD students from the class of 2020 to the class of 2017. The first week begins with the OSCE exam for 51 second-semester students (class of 2020), followed by 46 eighth-semester students (class of 2017) in the second week, then 50 fourth-semester students (class of 2019) in the third week, and closing with 50 sixth-semester students (class of 2018) in the fourth week. Overall, the total number of OSCE exam participants this time will be 197 PSPD FKIK UIN Malang students.

Due to the large number of students taking the OSCE exam, the Medical Education Study Program has implemented several standardized procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Students permitted to take the OSCE exam must have a letter of permission from a parent or guardian. During the OSCE exam period, students are required to adhere to COVID-19 prevention health protocols both on and off campus. The Medical Education Study Program also provides accommodation at the Ma'had and shuttle transportation to and from campus.

According to the Head of the Clinical Skills Unit, Dr. Riskiyah, MMRS., students who attend in Malang will take part in Clinical Skill Learning (CSL) independently guided by CSL coordinating lecturers in both large and small classes. Independent CSL sessions are held twice a day, on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the OSCE exam is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. During the OSCE, all officers, examiners, instructors, and students are required to wear complete PPE and maintain health protocols. According to the Head of the Medical Education Study Program, FKIK UIN Malang, Dr. Ana Rahmawati, M.Biomed., the material tested in this OSCE covers all skills related to a doctor's competence. These include injection techniques, heart examinations, blood pressure checks, and various other medical procedures.
