Amidst the hustle and bustle of digital transformation and modern healthcare technology, Indonesia is once again reminded of its roots: its abundant natural resources. The 23rd Mulawarman Pharmaceutical Conference (MPC) 2026<\/strong> Taking place on Tuesday\u2013Wednesday, April 21\u201322, 2026, this conference was more than just an annual academic routine. It became a major platform for the birth of visionary ideas about how Indonesia should view herbal medicine in the future. Held in the Mulawarman University Auditorium and organized in a hybrid<\/em>, This event was attended by a range of pharmaceutical experts from across the world who focus on the development of research-based pharmaceutical science. However, amidst the technical discussions, the public and participants' attention was drawn to an in-depth presentation by one of Indonesia's proud pharmaceutical heroines. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang<\/strong>, namely Prof. Dr. apt. Roihatul Muti'ah, SF, M.Kes..<\/p>\n

Reactualizing Pharmacognosy: Connecting Tradition with Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Roihatul came with an idea entitled \u201c"Reactualization of Pharmacognosy in Strengthening Jamu Healing Centers as a Pillar of Integrative Health Services Based on Local Wisdom"\u201d<\/em>. This theme is not just a paper title, but rather a manifesto for national health independence.<\/p>\n

In his presentation, he emphasized that herbal medicine should no longer be viewed as merely a traditional legacy of the past. It must transform into an integrated part of modern healthcare. "Jamu must be developed with a scientific approach to compete in the era of globalization," he emphasized to the participants.<\/p>\n

One of the main obstacles in the traditional medicine industry is standardization and public trust. This is where the Faculty of Medicine and Medicine, State Islamic University of Malang (FKIK UIN Malang), plays a crucial role as an educational institution that encourages innovation. Prof. Roihatul explained that integrating classical pharmacognosy with modern technology is a strategic step that is non-negotiable if we want Indonesian herbal medicine to be recognized medically internationally.<\/p>\n

DNA Barcoding Technology: Maintaining Purity Amidst Global Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a scientist, Prof. Roihatul recognizes that the quality of raw materials is a key foundation. He highlights the use of advanced technologies such as DNA Barcoding<\/strong>. This technology allows researchers and manufacturers to ensure the authenticity of herbal ingredients down to the molecular level.<\/p>\n

Amidst the growing issue of counterfeiting natural ingredients or mixing chemical drugs (BKO) into traditional products, DNA barcoding presents a highly effective preventative solution. "This technology can significantly improve the quality standards of our traditional medicinal products," he explained. With a rigorous scientific approach like this, it is hoped that public and medical confidence in herbal medicine will grow stronger, as its quality and safety have been laboratory-tested.<\/p>\n

Optimizing Biodiversity: Indonesia's Hidden Strength<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indonesia is often nicknamed as megabiodiversity country<\/em>, However, the abundant potential of medicinal plants has not been optimally utilized for national interests. Prof. Roihatul emphasized that this rich biodiversity presents a significant opportunity for researchers, particularly those from the Faculty of Medicine and Medicine, UIN Malang, to continue creating high-value innovations.<\/p>\n

Through ongoing research, native Indonesian medicinal plants no longer end up as dried herbal medicines, but are promoted to phytopharmaceuticals, becoming part of the formal national health system. The Faculty of Medicine and Medicine (FKIK) of UIN Malang has positioned itself as a center for the development of natural-based science, where research is conducted from upstream (cultivation) to downstream (ready-to-use products).<\/p>\n

Implementing Jamu Healing Centers: Changing the Face of Healthcare Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most interesting concepts in Prof. Roihatul's presentation is the concept Jamu Healing Center<\/strong>. He provided a concrete example: in several areas, the presence of herbal medicine clinics has proven that traditional medicine can coexist with conventional medicine under one standardized roof.<\/p>\n

This integration demonstrates that modern science and local culture need not be at odds. Instead, they can work hand in hand to provide more holistic healthcare services. The Jamu Healing Center concept not only opens up opportunities for natural healing for patients but also opens up new economic opportunities for the community based on the use of natural ingredients.<\/p>\n

A Message to the Golden Generation of Pharmacy: Becoming Masters in Your Own Country<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a moving closing remark, Prof. Roihatul delivered an inspiring message to the pharmacy students in attendance. He reminded them that the future of Indonesian herbal medicine lies in the hands of the younger generation currently studying.<\/p>\n

He encouraged students not to simply become consumers of foreign technology but to actively participate in research and create innovative products based on local materials. The spirit of national pharmaceutical independence must be instilled from an early age to prevent Indonesia from becoming continuously dependent on imported products and raw materials.<\/p>\n
